34. Operating Systems

Directions: Install a Linux-based operating system (Ubuntu) on a computer. Follow a printed copy of these instructions usually located at the install station.

  1. Review the Ubuntu operating system online.
  2. Turn off your computer.
  3. Insert an Ubuntu install usb drive.
  4. Start the computer.
  5. Watch for upper right hand corner of the screen and hit the F12 key when you see F12-BOOT MENU.
  6. Repeat Step 5 if you do not hit F12 in time.
  7. Use the arrow down key to select USB Drive
  8. Hit Enter on the keyboard.
  9. Wait for the computer to start-up on the USB drive.
  10. Click TRY Ubuntu. Not install.
  11. Utilize Ubuntu and explore this new operating environment.
  12. Now write a short essay describing what you learned about the Ubuntu Linux operating system. The essay should demonstrate that you understand that Windows is not the only operating system used on computers.
  13. Save this document as linux.docx in your innovation folder.
  14. Link this document under the Innovation section of the homepage as Linux.

Advanced Option Not Required:

  1. DO NOT DO THIS STEP ON A SCHOOL LAB COMPUTER! It will erase the existing operating system.
  2. Review the Ubuntu operating system online.
  3. Locate a computer to install Ubuntu Linux.
  4. Connect a hard drive to the computer.
  5. Insert an Ubuntu install disk into the CD-ROM drive. This may already be loaded.
  6. Start the computer.
  7. Watch for upper right hand corner of the screen and hit the F12 key when you see F12-BOOT MENU.
  8. Repeat Step 5 if you do not hit F12 in time.
  9. Use the arrow down key to select USB-CD-ROM Drive
  10. Hit Enter on the keyboard.
  11. Wait for the computer to start-up on the CD-ROM drive. You may see a black screen for a long time during this step. Watch the CD-ROM and you should see a green light on the front indicating the computer is working.
  12. Click Install Ununtu.
  13. Do not install download updates while installing
  14. Click continue.
  15. Check erase and install Ubuntu and click continue.
  16. Use entire disk and click install now.
  17. Select Los Angeles when you are asked where are you. Click continue.
  18. Click continue and use the English (US) keyboard layout.
  19. Your name will be smstest, password will also be smstest. The computer name should automatically fill in. Click continue.
  20. Allow the install to complete.
  21. After the install has completed restart the Ubuntu computer and explore this new operating environment.
  22. Now write a short essay describing what you learned about the Ubuntu Linux operating system. The essay should demonstrate that you understand that Windows is not the only operating system used on computers.
  23. Save this document as linux.doc in your technology folder.
